INTRODUCTION
As a kiln is
firing up and cooling down, the changes in temperature make some profound
changes in the clay. The clay goes from this soft, totally fragile substance to
one which is rock-hard, impervious to water, wind, and time. The change is
nearly mystical in its complete metamorphosis, and might be deemed so if it
were not so common
Because
of its firing strenght, stoneware is an
interesting clay body type for artist-potters even if today many of them have
lowered the firing temperature of their process.
The
character of the clay of the finished ware, which may range from refined to the
subtle, to the highly rustic, depending on the will of the potter still attracts many of us. The colour of fired
stoneware may vary enormously, from cream to
brown to black. The colour may be affected by :

recherche et développement effectuée par le céramiste Édouard Bastarache sur
les formulations ou recettes d'argile de grès à haute température est un
document très important pour qui veut comprendre les interactions des matériaux
conduisant à des qualités argileuses et de cuisson recherchées par les
potiers.
Cette mine de renseignements est basée sur un contrôle de qualité très étendu
que j'ai eu l'occasion d'observer lors d'un stage d'étude au Centre de
Recherche Industrielle à Québec (CRIQ).
À cette époque, nous faisions des recherches sur les possibilités d'utiliser
les argiles locales des Iles-de-la-Madeleine, du Lac St-Jean ainsi que celles
provenant des usines produisant de la brique. De tout temps, la stabilité
des matériaux composant l'argile à modelage ou tournage du milieu artisanal est
confronté aux sites de matières premières et à leurs limites
géophysiques. Ainsi le fait de pouvoir colliger à partir des matériaux de
base connus dont le kaolin, le ball clay, les fondants, la silice et divers
résidus de minerais, devient une source de repères non encore connus et qui
peut faciliter grandement des analyses pour ajuster au besoin nos propres
argiles.
Visiter la multitude de recherches qui sont offertes dans tous les documents
produits par cet auteur est un legs pour le présent et le futur et un
documentaire sans pareil.
The research and development
conducted by Édouard Bastarache, ceramist, on the formulations or recipes for high
temperature stoneware clays is a very important document for the understanding
of the interactions of materials leading to clay and baking qualities sought by
potters.This wealth of information is based on an extensive quality control
that I had the opportunity to observe during a course of study at the Quebec
Industrial Research Center (CRIQ). At that time, we were researching the
possibility of using local clays from Iles-de-la-Madeleine, Lac St-Jean and facilities
producing bricks. Historically, the stability of the clay components for modeling
or throwing in the craft world is faced by raw material sites and their
geophysical limits. So being able to collect from known raw materials like kaolin,
ball clay, fluxing materials, silica and various ore residues, becomes a source
of not yet known landmarks, which can greatly facilitate analyses to adjust to need our own clays.

INTRODUCTION
As a kiln is

changes in the clay. The clay goes from this soft, totally fragile substance to
one which is rock-hard, impervious to water, wind, and time. The change is
nearly mystical in its complete metamorphosis, and might be deemed so if it
were not so common
A
clay body may be made of a mixture of clays or clays combined with other
mineral substances coming from the earth crust. They are mixed together to achieve a specific ceramic purpose . Many
deposits of natural clay are availabe and supply clays that are suitable for
forming as they are. Such clays may be called « natural clay
bodies ».
Often
times, it is necessary to blend together
materials of different origins and compositions in order to achieve the desired
results. It is usually necessary to make additions to a natural clay so it can
be practically used in forming and firing.
Many
kinds of changes may be sought :
1-Changes
of colour or texture
2-Changes
in plasticity
3-Changes to avoid undesirable physical
properties such as excessive shrinkage, possible warping and cracking, and to improve green strenght.
4-Changes
of the maturing temperature
5-Changes
to improve the fit of glazes
Because
of its firing strenght, stoneware is an
interesting clay body type for artist-potters even if today many of them have
lowered the firing temperature of their process.
The
character of the clay of the finished ware, which may range from refined to the

stoneware may vary enormously, from cream to
brown to black. The colour may be affected by :
1-The
type and amount of metallic oxides
2-The
type of firing, oxidation or reduction.
Our
clays were all fired in reduction to cone 9. They can also be fired in oxidation but we
recommend that those not containing spar be tested on small amounts to see if
too much cristobalite is produced causing dunting. If a clay dunts in
oxidation, add increasing amounts of spar starting at 10% and test again.
Dilatometric
studies, if available, would be the thing to do for oxidation clays without
spar.

ne konas neniun kiu rekordas siajn ceramikajn testojn tiel skrupule kiel vi
faras aŭ kiu provizas ilin tiel sindone por estimi. La ceramika komunumo
estas tre bonŝanca havi aliron al la riĉeco de testaj datumoj kiujn vi
kompilis. Tio devus vere atingi ĉiujn kiujn dividas vian amon de la metio.
